10 May 2011 | The European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) has passed recommendations to the Council of the European Union on Monday evening that include the request to the Council to advocate at the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly “the establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly (UNPA) within the UN system.” The adoption of the text by the plenary of the European Parliament is considered a matter of form and is expected to take place in June.

REPAC Seminar on Regional Security in Central Africa
Members of the Central African Network of Parliamentarians (REPAC) have met in the Cameroonian city of Douala for a two-day seminar from 1 to 2 December 2010. REPAC is the Assembly of the people of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). Although decided in 2002 through the adoption by the Member States of the Protocol on the establishment of REPAC, the set up of the network is still not entirely accomplished yet.
Reform of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)

Buenos Aires: Declaration calls for a UN Parliament
On 4th October 2010 an international meeting of the Campaign for the Establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly in the Senate of Argentina in Buenos Aires has called on the United Nations and its member states to initiate a “preparatory process towards an intergovernmental conference for the purpose of establishing a Parliamentary Assembly at the United Nations.“

At a conference in Canberra organized by the Australian National University, experts have suggested the establishment of a world parliament on global climate policy. The new body, initially composed of around 550 delegates from national parliaments, could be set up as a consultative body to the Conference of State Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC.

The new rulebook, in force since December 2009 after many years of negotiation and then ratification, greatly increases MEPs' co-legislating powers and creates a beefed up foreign policy post and a president of the EU council.
