June is a month of World summits in Latin America
In these days, 18 and 19 June in Los Cabos, Mexico, the G-20 summit is taking place.
This meeting is extremely important, as Prime Ministers will have to agree on global measures to face the crisis.
In addition, from 13 to 22 June Rio de Janeiro will host the Rio+20 conference on sustainable development and climate change issues. This conference, organized by the United Nations, takes place exactly 20 years after the Rio de Janeiro conference (1992) and 10 years after the World Summit in Johannesburg (2002).
The meeting will focus on green economy in the context of sustainable development poverty eradication and in creating the institutional framework for sustainable development.
Furthermore, at the beginning of June the Member Countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) met in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The meeting has clearly shown that the relations between Member states are so strained that the organization risks disintegration. As an example, Bolivia maintains its claim for access to the sea from Chile in spite of José Miguel Insulza, the OAS Secretary, appeal for dialogue. The countries of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas have also asked to reform the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, accused of attacking only progressive governments and of defending the interests of the United States. The meeting closed with the acknowledgement that the OAS needs to be reformed. To do this, Member Countries have agreed a period of 6 to 9 months to analyse the situation.
On the 6 June Chile, Peru, Colombia and Mexico met signed an accord formally creating the Pacific Alliance, an organization aimed at launching economic integration among these countries. The Pacific Alliance emerges an a challenge for the Mercosur, that is currently dealing with a strong protectionism from Argentina and an increasing role played by Brazil.
