President Correa in favour of an increased integration in Latin America
The Ecuadorean Presdent Rafael Correa declared to the Peruvian national TV last week that South American states should follow the European Union’s example in creating a common citizenship.
President Correa was in Lima to attended the VI ordinary meeting of the Heads of State and Government of UNASUR member countries.
In particular, President Correa wishes that the UNASUR member states pursue the freedom of movement of citizens and workers as it is already happening in the Andean Community.
President Correa also declared to be in favour of the re-composition of the Organisation of American States, but only under the premise of a re-shifting of the influence of the English-speaking countries. He also pointed out that the signatory states of the San Jose’ pact on human rights should have a prominent position in the new OAS.
Correa supported the UNASUR decision to suspend Paraguay until the next year’s elections scheduled for April 2013. The logic behind this suspension is, according to the Ecaudorean President, that the UNASUR must not tolerate golpismo that threatens Paraguayan democracy.
