Russia Proposes BRICS Parliamentary Assembly

Russia has started last April its Presidency over the BRICS countries with a bold proposal: the creation of a Parliamentary Assembly of BRICS, in order to promote the parliamentary dimension of the association.

The goal of the project is to strengthen long-term cooperation between the five member states in key issues of global economy and politics and to consolidate their role in global affairs.

In spite of the lack of democracy in China and the serious democratic deficit of Russia, this initiative shows that international democracy has become a necessary dimension of international relations, which will stimulate, in the foreseeable future, the development of domestic democracy.

The first Parliamentary Forum of BRICS has taken place on 8 June in Moscow and was devoted to international security and economic development.
