Council of Europe: situation of human rights in Europe in 2014

“2014 was a bad year for human rights in Europe”, said Nils Muižnieks, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, while presenting his annual activity report on 23 April 2015.

 

In particular, the Commissioner highlighted the dire situation of migrants who continue to die in the Mediterranean Sea in the attempted to reach Europe after having fled conflicts, persecution and poverty, as well as the grave humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and deterioration of the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.

 

The report deals with a number of additional human rights issues, which were relevant for Europe in 2014, including: internet and human rights; freedom of expression and media freedom; the impact of economic crisis on the implementation of human rights; children’s rights; human rights of persons with disabilities, LGBTI persons, Roma and stateless persons; gender equality; racism and intolerance.
